Vietnam – Rediscovering a Land of Inspiration Vietnam holds a special place in my heart, not just for its breathtaking landscapes but for its deep cultural and architectural richness. It was for these reasons that I chose Vietnam as my first international destination two years ago. That journey left an indelible mark on me, as I explored the vibrant streets of Ho Chi Minh City, marveled at the ancient structures of Hanoi, and embraced the serenity of Ha Long Bay. However, despite the incredible experiences during my short trip, I felt that there was so much more to discover. Vietnam is a country with layers of history, diverse architectural styles, and a culture so vibrant that a single visit could hardly do it justice. That’s why I’m eager to return — not just as a traveler but as a sustainable architect passionate about designing with purpose and mindfulness. In my work, I strive to create designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible. Vietnam, with its unique blend of ancient traditions and modernity, offers unparalleled inspiration. From the traditional yellow facades of Hội An to the imposing Imperial City of Huế, each structure tells a story. By visiting these iconic places again, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how historical architecture coexists with modern developments. This return trip will be crucial for my growth as a sustainable architect. Witnessing the elegance of structures like the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Saigon or the humble One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi will inspire new ideas for blending sustainability with timeless beauty. The diversity of Vietnamese architecture, with its colonial influences and traditional craftsmanship, will help me approach my future projects with a fresh perspective, ensuring that my designs honor the past while contributing to a more sustainable future. Conclusion: Vietnam has already given me unforgettable memories, but it has so much more to offer. By winning this contest, I would not only rekindle my love for the country but also enhance my journey as an architect dedicated to sustainability and cultural respect. Traveling has always been a way for me to get out of my comfort zone, and I knew traveling to Vietnam would be no different. This trip will be more than just discovering new places—it will be an opportunity for me to grow in ways I can’t even fully anticipate. The rich and diverse culture of Vietnam is something I am interested in experiencing for myself. Whether trying street food in Hanoi or learning about local traditions, I know this trip will expand my understanding of the world. Reading about a place is one thing, but living in it even briefly is quite another. By interacting with people and their way of life, I will gain a new appreciation for different cultures, which will make me more open-minded and empathetic. I read about the history of Vietnam, especially the Vietnam War, but visiting places like the Cu Chi Tunnels and the War Relics Museum gives us an unseen perspective Seeing these places and hearing stories from Vietnamese people would defy logic if I have about history and it has helped me look at the nuances of the world more. It’s one thing to learn about history in class; It’s another thing to live where it happened. The natural beauty of Vietnam is something I’m really looking forward to. Whether it’s the serene rice terraces of Sapa or the stunning waters of Ha Long Bay, I know I’ll be more connected to the landscape. This trip will remind us of the importance of preserving the environment and inspire us to live in a sustainable manner. Being in nature always clears my mind, and I believe that Vietnam will give me more opportunities to think. Traveling in a country where I don't speak the language and know nothing will be difficult, but I am ready for it. Every time I figure out how to navigate a new situation—whether it’s ordering food or finding my way around a busy city—it gives me confidence. These small victories will remind me that I can handle whatever life throws my way. Ultimately, I knew this trip would give me time to figure out what was most important to me. When I’m away from home routines and distractions, I have space to reflect on my values and goals. Seeing how people live in Vietnam, often focused on family and community, can inspire me to reevaluate my own priorities. In 2022, arriving in Hanoi felt like stepping into a world rich with history and architecture that tells its own stories. As an interior designer captivated by cultural depth, I was instantly drawn to Hanoi’s blend of French colonial facades, ancient pagodas, and buzzing street life. The Old Quarter, with its narrow, history-laden streets, seemed to freeze time, with each lane showcasing traditional houses with tiled roofs, wooden balconies, and delicate carvings—testaments to Vietnam’s enduring craftsmanship. The city’s spiritual side was equally compelling. At the Temple of Literature, honoring Confucius, I felt an almost meditative connection to wisdom from the past. Hoan Kiem Lake, alive each morning with locals practicing Tai Chi, captured Vietnam’s seamless balance between tradition and modernity. And the food—fragrant, rich, and brimming with flavor—told stories of heritage with every bite. For a birdwatcher who’s spotted over 500 species in India, Vietnam is a treasure trove. The diversity of its habitats offers endless possibilities, and I can’t wait to discover more. On my next visit, I’m eager to dive into the dynamic world around Ho Chi Minh City. The city’s energy is palpable, from the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica to the Saigon Central Post Office, historical gems that highlight a fascinating colonial past. In Ben Thanh Market, I’ll immerse myself in the flavors and craftsmanship of Vietnam. Beyond the city, the Mekong Delta beckons. Its rivers, floating markets, and lush landscapes are a dream for someone who thrives on culture and nature. And at the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve—the “Green Lung” of Ho Chi Minh City—I hope to spot wading birds, colorful kingfishers, and maybe even the rare Painted Stork. This journey promises an unforgettable blend of the city’s vibrant pulse and the quiet majesty of Vietnam’s landscapes, each piece amplifying my admiration for this beautiful country. Vietnam, once again, will be a new adventure every day, a perfect tapestry of culture, architecture, and nature.
